Learning Goals and Community Service

Service learning combines learning goals and community service in ways that enhance both student growth and the common good. It’s a form of education where learning occurs through a cycle of action and reflection as students seek to achieve real objectives for the community and deeper understanding and skills for themselves.

Community service involves projects that many organizations and individuals participate in to help churches, organizations, schools, and communities. Service learning is community service with intentional learning being the primary goal coupled with the service. It’s a teaching and learning opportunity that integrates meaningful community service with purposeful instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities. The program empowers students to cultivate real-life skills by researching areas of need, providing reflections on their service experiences, and recognizing their accomplishments with end-of-the-year demonstrations.

Service learning benefits the students and the surrounding community. It offers students a chance to connect what they are learning in school with an action and a chance to improve the lives around them. They can apply their learning to real world situations and then reflect on their learning in order to learn more deeply about empathy, and trustworthiness. It also promotes problem solving and critical thinking skills as well as cognitive development. Service learning is effective when it is integrated into the school culture. When a school unites into developing character, it sees amazing results. At Churchill, we promote our core values of integrity, kindness, responsibility, respect, and perseverance both at school and in the community. Service learning is student driven. It also enables students to be independent and collaborate on something that is meaningful to them. It is a great way for them to learn about giving and helps them become better people. These are concepts that if started now could help them grow for the rest of their lives.

At Churchill, we have many options for community service such as the art mentoring program, reading initiative, Bidewee animal shelter, Model UN club, Rescuing Leftover Cuisine, Philanthropy Club, YAP, International Student Learning which is a non-profit organization here at Churchill, and student council. There are also many opportunities in your neighborhood that offer community service experiences.

We have a Service Learning Directory on our Service Learning Website.
